First things first: it's been a hot minute.
I can't say I've been super busy or dealing with personal trauma or off finding myself. I've simply been enjoying life outside the academic sphere and suffering from a lack of artistic motivation. That being said, I can now feel my creative juices starting to flow again, and I've several zany projects planned for the near future. Watch this space. As some of you may know, I recently moved to Vancouver, BC. (By recently I mean almost nine months ago; yeah, it's one of those blog posts.) When I arrived here, I decided to press pause on my literary translation career and try something new. I took up a position as editor/curator for the social magazine Flipboard. This work has allowed me to bring together two of my passions: (a) finding, reading and encouraging/forcing other people to read the most fascinating, the most insightful, the most thought-provoking stuff out there; (b) working with software developers and their beloved algorithms to improve the health of our digital information ecosystems. I ain't here to proselytise on my time off, but Flipboard is pretty sweet. The concept is simple. You make an account and begin following what are called 'topics'. These are spaces where editors, curators and algorithms aggregate content around a certain theme. You can follow as many topics as you want and practically any topic you want (there are 30,000+ of them). Once you've followed a topic, content related to it will begin appearing on your homefeed, though you can always navigate directly to its dedicated topic space should you want to consult only that topic. You can follow publishers, to see all of their content on any theme, or you can follow their 'magazines', to see only some of their content on specific themes. You can also follow other users' magazines, or create your own, and cram it full of whatever you feel the world needs to know about. I've seen magazines dedicated exclusively to Timothée Chalamet's hair. As a gesture of good faith, and to prove that I haven't been doing absolutely nothing over the past nine months, here's a link to my personal magazine on Flipboard, Conor's Curation Corner. It has no theme; it's just a bunch of shit that will itch your intellectual scratch. Until next time. |
